Product colour swatches

Adding colour swatches to your products

  1. Go to Products
    In your Shopify dashboard, click Products and select an existing product or create a new one.
  2. Add Product Details
    Add your product title, description, images, and any size variants if needed.
  3. Choose a Product Category
    Under Category, select the most relevant product category (for example: Apparel & Accessories).
  4. Add a Colour Variant
    Scroll to Variants and click Add another option. Name the option Colour or Color. (If you named the option something else like Shade, Tone, Hue, Colorway, or even Colour with a trailing space, it won't be detected as a colour option and will render as text.)
  5. Create Your Colours
    Click Add colour, enter the colour name (eg. Stone), then choose the matching colour using the colour picker.
  6. Select a Base Colour
    Choose a base colour such as Beige or Brown. This helps improve storefront filtering and search.
  7. Save Your Product
    Click Save. Your colour swatches should now appear on the product page.
  8. Edit Colours Later (Optional)
    You can update or add more colours anytime by going to Content → Metaobjects.

 

Change the colour of a swatch

  1. Go to Metaobjects
    In your Shopify dashboard, click Content and select Metaobjects. This is where your saved colours are stored.
  2. Open the Colour Definition
    Find and click Colour (or Color) in your list of metaobject definitions to see every colour you've created.
  3. Select the Colour to Change
    Click the colour entry you want to update (eg. Stone).
  4. Rename the Colour (Optional)
    If you're changing the name as well, edit the name field. Keep it consistent with how it appears on your products so nothing breaks the connection.
  5. Update the Swatch Colour
    Click the colour picker and choose the new shade, or paste in a hex code for an exact match.
  6. Check the Base Colour
    Confirm the base colour (eg. Beige or Brown) still suits the new shade, as this drives storefront filtering and search.
  7. Save Your Changes
    Click Save. The updated swatch will apply everywhere that colour is used across your products.
